[Review] Pulse: The Trial

33005370I received a copy of this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Quick fire review:

Thanks so much to author Ryan Crawford for sending me this book.

I don’t read a lot of books set in space but I am so glad I gave this a chance. If you are looking for a sleek adventure with strong female leads, then this is a great book to pick up.

Forty of Earth’s most dangerous women compete to become warriors in the interstellar empire known as PULSE. They must endure a Trial on a death-planet filled with monsters and betrayal. Only three will survive. And the war hasn’t even begun.

It’s a future like you’ve never seen before: one populated by amazing (and often unfriendly) aliens and a Humanity that is 100% female. A paradise in some ways, a prison in others, this handful of extraordinary women must fight to stay alive in a brutal universe, enduring an onslaught of deadly challenges, just to join the fight against a star-spanning threat they can scarcely imagine.

3.5 out of 5 stars

Keeping this short to make sure I don’t spoil the whole damn thing.

Thanks to the author for sending me a copy of this book. Sorry it took so long to actually put my thoughts down.

The Trial: Pulse follows a group of strong girls who are training to become officers for PULSE, a group who maintain the law on other planets. Training in an academy for eight years, their final year before graduation sees them having to take on the Trial. The catch? Not everyone survives. Navigating harsh terrain, they have 72 hours to make it from one point to another alive…easier said than done. With a shit tonne of explosions, some pretty terrible deaths, this action packed survival of the fittest story was a fun ride.

My favourite things:

  • The characters: Lead by strong women, this world is populated with perfectly developed and complex characters. Stella and Faye are the two we get to know the most and I was completely taken with both of them.
  • The world: Author Crawford is great at putting you in this desolate and competitive futuristic setting. From the bloody description of the Trial to the scope of the world in which they live in, I felt like every piece of detail painted a vivid picture.
  • The Trial: This makes the Hunger Games look like child’s play. To say the Trial is brutal is an understatement. With some characters not even making it off the drop ship alive, every unexpected bloody twist and turn, made for an epic backdrop.

Even if sci-fi books aren’t your jam, I definitely recommend giving this a go. Thanks again Ryan for sending through a copy.
